How do you make decisions in your life?

How do you decide what is the most important thing to you?

How do choose between one thing or another?

A friend and I recently had a conversation where we were talking about values, and how she had been asked what her two highest values were and how the question had kind of derailed her a bit (and for the record these are the best questions because they make us have to deeply reflect and consider who we are, and what we stand for, and how we are).

Most of us tend to drift along in life, and make decisions based on the type of house we want to live in, or mortgage repayments, or career or investment goals or where to send the kids to school, or shall we go to Bali or Fiji this year.

Most of us know the things that we want for our life and we are clear on what we want to attain and achieve.  A lot of our sense of self and self worth is tied up in these things.

We might create a vision board or do a Be, Do, Have list, or set ourselves goals or targets to achieve.

What this means is that we become externally focused and it is in this that we can lose sight of who we are – IF we ever even knew who what person is in the first place.

Have you ever asked yourself these questions:


Who do I want to be?

How do I want to be living my life?

What are my priorities?

What is important to me?

What are my values?

When you understand these things, it becomes a lot easier to make decisions and choices in your life, because you have a very clear, non-negotiable decision making framework.

But the thing is, most of the time we don’t ask these questions, because it is too hard.

Asking them means that we have to take a good long hard look at ourselves and take responsibility for who we are, for how we are, for where we are.

(The irony is though, that we are more than happy to go through this kind of process at work, or in our business).

I believe that a successful, happy life is achieved when we have CLARITY.

When we have a very clear sense of who we are, we know what unconditional happiness means for each of us, we are rock solid in the manner in which we want to live our life (our values, or principles) and how we want to be in our life.

The other stuff – the stuff of conditional happiness – then just becomes the icing on the cake in an already happy, full and successful life.
