When we think about our value, we often think about it as a dollar figure or through some other external measure – what we do for work, where we live, who we are with, what we are doing, where we are up to in our lives.
We are often clearer about our values themselves, than we are on the value OF ourselves.
This idea of value of self is a theme that has come up a lot over the last few weeks – both in my own life and business and in that of those around me.
This is generally always the way of things too – the world around us is always our mirror. Our work is to have the courage to look closely into that mirror and to use it’s reflection back at us to make some different choices in our own lives. (I’m lucky that I then get to share what I discover with you too – it’s like a magical hall of mirrors).
For a long time now, I have chosen to place the value of my mental, emotional, physical, spiritual and social well-being at the absolute top of my priorities in life. Nothing is more important to me than to be balanced within myself. As the world is my mirror for everything, the more balanced I am within myself – it follows that the more balanced the world around me is going to be. The more I value this, the better every area of my life is becoming.
A deep level of awareness came to me a couple of months ago, when a few things happened that were a bit out of the ordinary but then on a closer look, kind of all fitted into this idea that I was not valuing myself properly in other ways.
I was not valuing my time properly.
I was not valuing my knowledge properly.
I was not valuing my experience properly.
I was not valuing boundaries.
I was however valuing flexibility.
Flexibility is a very useful thing. It is important to be flexible. But valuing flexibility over my time in my day was not working.
Valuing flexibility without clear boundaries is not helpful.
Not having boundaries in place in terms of goal setting, scheduling, actions, and agreements is the quickest way to waste your time and therefore your life.
Boundaries need to be very clearly set out and communicated. And when this is done, and everyone has agreed to them (most importantly you) – then you can be flexible.
What is your value? How do you value your self? Your time? How seriously do you value your dreams?
Interestingly, I do both life and business coaching (it’s a lot more than coaching what I do, but that’s the word that makes sense to people).
And you know what people are more than happy to invest in? Their business. Hands down, every time. My clients are very happy to invest time and money into business coaching, but it’s far tougher often for people to get their head around the value of investing in THEMSELVES just in and of itself.
Why is this? Why do we place a greater value on the importance of our business or our work or the renovations at our house than we do on learning how to become a better, happier and more fulfilled human being?
I’m interested to hear your thoughts on this.
The more I have valued myself, and my own personal development and healing and growth, the more value I bring to the world around me – the more I realise my own importance, worth and value – and the more the world around me values me. It’s a win for all of us.
