On Saturday I spoke at a business conference on “Feeling the fear and doing it anyway”.

It was the first time I had spoken on this topic.  I’d submitted my presentation two weeks prior to the event, but as any of you who have been following me for the last few weeks would know – my time management has been a  little chaotic, so the presentation I submitted was not my best work.  Over the last two weeks, I’d been reflecting on the presentation and how I could improve it.

However, on the morning of the presentation, while out for a walk, I made a decision.

I wasn’t going to do the presentation as planned.

I was instead going to get up there and let the people that were there to listen to me talk to them about fear that I was going to show them how to move through fear as I was actually moving through my fear – me doing a public presentation without a structure or without slides.

Just me up there.

Me doing something that created a feeling of fear within me, but that was something that needed to happen at some point if I really want to get to the top of my game as a professional speaker.

Am I good enough to be doing this?

If I couldn’t stand up in front of a crowd of people and feel confident to speak to them about content that I know intimately – what feeling the fear is and doing it anyway –  then I was not the right person to be speaking on this topic.

It could have back fired.

But it didn’t.

The response I got blew me away.  It helped people in a way that me doing a traditional presentation could never, ever in a million years have done.  Me showing up in all my fear, gave every single other person in that room permission to do the same.

So, what are you not doing because of fear?

Fear of what might happen, what people will think, how you will cope?

What would happen if you let go of all of that, allowed yourself to feel that fear, trusted and just did that thing anyway?
