Become a Walk Leader

Do you want to create your own little “happy hub” in your local community?

The Happiness Hunter walks are led by Happiness Hunters; they are free and they are open to everyone in the local community.

The walks are amazing and they are changing the lives of the people who come along and are part of them.

They have contributed in so many ways to not just our walkers lives, but to the lives of the leaders.

We have now made it easier for people (just like you) to start a walk in your local community and to come on board as a walk leader with The Happiness Hunter.

We will provide you with training and ongoing mentoring in your role. You also get to choose the location, day and time that will work for you to start your walk.

What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead. — Nelson Mandela

The Happiness Hunter walks are at the beating heart of The Happiness Hunter community and support our three core values of connection, reciprocity and well-being.

Our walk leaders are guided by the 6 C’s:

Community

Connection

Contribution

Commitment

Compassion

Consistency

If this sounds like something you are interested in being part of – check out the FAQ’s below, or contact Fiona here to find out more.

FAQs

What does a walk leader do?

As a walk leader for a Happiness Hunter walk, you will hold the space for the walk and the people attending.  You will determine the walk location, the day of the week and the time for the walk.   Your role is turn up each week, and to welcome and encourage new and existing walkers.

Am I a good match?

One of the greatest truths in life, is that through giving we receive.

Do you want to be part of a movement that is contributing towards happier, healthier and more connected human beings?

Are you looking to give back or volunteer your time or energy in a meaningful way?

Being a walk leader with The Happiness Hunter may be for you if:

You are able to commit one – two hours each week

 Enjoy being outside

 Value your well-being

Like meeting and connecting with new people

Enjoy talking with others (and listening)

Interested in looking at life holistically

 Open minded

Have a strong interest in ongoing personal development

Want to make a meaningful contribution to yourself and your community

Support the vision of The Happiness Hunter and want to be part of our community

You may be a coach or counsellor or working in some other kind of healing or teaching capacity OR have a desire to move into that space.

How do I become a walk leader?

Contact Fiona here or call 1300 921 478 to express your interest, or attend a walk near you to speak with the walk leader there. If you do decide that you want to go ahead and start a walk, we will guide you through the process and provide training and support to help let people know about your walk.

Ideally, you will have participated in The Happiness Hunter Bootcamp.

Why would I become a walk leader?

You will feel a “calling” of some sort to be involved and you will want to start a walk because you inherently see the value within it – both for yourself and for your community.

How do I chose my day and time?

As the walk leader, it’s really important that the day and the time work for you.

When the walks first started and Fiona was leading them all, the walks were all on days that her kids where in creche and they started at 9.30 because that meant that people who had kids at school could do the school drop off and then attend the walk.  This is why most of the walks are still weekdays and start after 9am.  The walks work best when they are weekly.

However, we recognise that not everyone has these requirements.

We do currently have a Saturday morning walk.  We also have a walk on the first Tuesday of every month. If you wanted to start something at lunchtime (for example you work full time in the city) or after work (maybe you don’t have kids), or on a Sunday afternoon – we are really interested to hear from you. If it works for you, it will work for others too.

How do I chose my location?

All of our walks with The Happiness Hunter have three requirements for location:

  • they are in a beautiful natural setting
  • there is car parking
  • there is a cafe near the carpark

We walk for 45 minutes to an hour before finishing up with a drink and conversation at the cafe.

Is there training provided?

As a walk leader, there is an “on-boarding” process to help you lead your walk, where we will provide you with the guidelines for leading a walk.

We have a code of conduct to help you manage the dynamics and behaviour within your group (on the very infrequent occasions that there is an issue – most people coming on a walk are very supportive of the vision and the purpose of the walk).

You will also be able to connect with the other walk leaders through a private Facebook group – we are building an AMAZING community of walk leaders.

There is a monthly walk leader online Zoom meeting which it is great if you can attend.

You are also able to speak with Fiona or another walk leader at any stage if you have any concerns or questions.

What does it cost to be involved?

There is no cost to you to become a walk leader.

The role is a voluntary position and you will not be paid for it.

There is an annual leadership day that you will be invited to be part of.

As a walk leader, you are welcomed and encouraged to participate in courses and retreats that are provided by The Happiness Hunter, however while this is really encouraged to help you understand the philosophy and framework of The Happiness Hunter (and benefit from the learnings), this is not a requirement for you to become involved as a voluntary walk leader.  What we have found to date is that all of our walk leaders have participated in the bootcamp and the retreat, which has helped them both be better in their lives and to support their walkers.

What is the time commitment?

Apart from leading your walk, and helping to share the message of The Happiness Hunter walks – there is nothing else that is expected of you except turning up.  (Aside from an additional one hour per month for the walk leaders call and the optional annual walk leaders development weekend)

As a walk leader, your role is to turn up about 5 minutes before your walk starts and lead the walk and ideally be available to chat with your group over a coffee after the walk for 30 minutes to an hour (if you can).

All of the bookings and social media marketing are managed by The Happiness Hunter but obviously, your walk will be more successful the more you can promote it in your local community.

We encourage walk groups to set up a whatsapp group chat (that is solely for walk communications) to communicate about the walk.  This makes it easier for you as a walk leader to manage one central communication place.

What happens if I can no longer lead my walk?

If you are ready to start a walk, ideally we would love you to commit for 6 – 12 months.  If you are not sure that you are able to do this, then it might not be the right time for you to start a walk.

If your circumstances do change, there is often a walker who is happy to step up into that role to lead the walk.  We just ask that you communicate clearly with Fiona so that we can manage the continuity.
